Rationing
Rationing in the second world war was considered as "THE
NECESSARY EVIL".At the start of the war every-body any age
adult or baby was issued with a ration book.Inside a ration book
was pages and pages of coupons for different types of food. These
foods would include things such as tea, eggs, butter, sausages and
bread.Sometimes you could have fruit and vegitables. However these
wouldn't be like the fruits and vegitables we have today there
was no imported exotic fruit like bannanas all thefruit you could
have would be whatever was in season.
Every week house wives would go to their registered shop to collect
their weekly rations. The house wives would give the shop keeper a coupon
for whatever food they needed but this would only include a certain amount
such as 2oz of buter or a 1lb of tea.Although this was a sufficient amount for
most families some had a large number of children and so needed more food
so they turned to the "BLACK MARKET".The Black Market was were people could
buy and sell things at advanced prices.Say a mother of six hadn't enough meat
from the rationed amount of food to feed all of her family but she had enough
potatoes because they were cheap she would save up her rationed meat and sell it
on the black market for more potatoes.
This is a picture of an original ration book used by
in the second world war.
