Instructions:

Look at playgrounds either locally or in
magazines/Internet/catalogues etc.
What makes a good playground?
Consider age of children.
Amount of use.
Safety.
Consider using a key for each piece of apparatus.
Plenary:

Swap ideals/maps/plans with a neighbour.
What do the children think?
Are there any areas that could cause problems?
How? Why?
Can they suggest solutions to these?
Can they use the correct mathematical language
of shape and position?



Extension:


Children could try to make a 3d version of their 2d plan.
Can the shapes be identified on the plan?
Costing the plan could be the next step using catalogues etc.
The teacher could at this point add restrictions on the budget or demand a quiet area with seating etc.
