Your questions answered

Following on from a conversation with Roger Broadbent, the headteacher of Bearwood Primary School, the numeracy consultants are inviting teachers to share their Mathematical ideas and problems via the Internet. The idea is simple - if you are having any difficulty teaching any element of the Numeracy Strategy, talk to any of the consultants and they will pool their ideas, resources and the ideas of other teachers, and put their suggestions on the internet.

The first query comes from Bearwood Primary and regards the teaching of clockwise and anti-clockwise to a multiethnic class of Year 2 children. SOLUTION1

Problems downloading the resources?

Most of the files are created in Word and Excel. There are a few Publisher files, too. So the first thing to check is that you have these programs and Interent Explorer 4.0 or later.

I have found another possibility today (20th August). If you have lots of boxes appearing mixed in with the text... try saving the document, come off the internet and then load up the file in Word or Excel. I had the boxes appear whilst on the net but not when solely in Word.

One common feature of those who have contacted me about getting a screen load of gobbledegook is that they are using Netscape as their browser. A change os browser might help. I have been using Dial.Pipex and occasionally Tiny without problems. Others use browsers such as demon, yahoo, etc. I'm afraid I don't like the most commonly available one from the High Street (FreeServe) because I objected to it setting my internet applications up the way it decided it thought best! (Designed by a man??!!) However, there are lots of freebies out there with Internet Explorer and usually Outlook Express (for your e-mail) too. Another you could try is the learnfree that's been advertised in the TES but I suspect that this may be freeserve-based...

Another problem arises when the font used in the original is not one you have on your computer. Sometimes highlighting the lot and changing the font which has been substituted by your machine will work... but not always. You can either re-type it yourself or try and get hold of an original to photocopy.

Good Luck! If you're still having trouble downloading resources, please get in touch.
