There are a number of servers in use by Sandwell schools, contact Broadband Sandwell if you are not sure which server your school uses.
Please follow this link for information about creating websites.
1. The "original" Sandwell MBC hosted service
This is a Linux based platform and hosts most school websites from within Sandwell's server farm. Connection settings are different for external uploads (i.e. from outside of the Sandwell Schools Broadband Network)
(a) for internal users
- Use Filezilla which can be downloaded here (alternatively, type filezilla into a google search and follow the download links). Other tools can be used, but Filezilla allows you to ensure that your connection will work before proceeding to identify appropriate settings in other software.
- The server uses a secure data transfer method: secure FTP. Choose SFTP using SSH2 as the Servertype. FTP is not a secure method of data transfer (passwords can be sent clear text over the connection). Port 22 should be selected in the Port settings box.
- In the server address textbox, type smbc-ssh.sandwell.local (you should also ensure that your DNS is correctly configured, follow this link.)
- FTP usernames and passwords have previously been advised to schools. Contact us if these have been forgotten or lost NB: We will only be able to advise school staff of these details, third parties, including parents etc. should ask the school to obtain these from us. Schools that made use of the login and users secure folders should contact me to reset these.
- Set the remote folder to be : /var/local/web.sites/school_<<your_school_name>>.sandwell.sch.uk/html. (Replace the <<your_school_name>> with your school's "Schoolnames on the Net" name, i.e. the same as the domain used in your school's email addresses); if your school was st-godwins, you would enter /var/local/web.sites/school_st-godwins.sandwell.sch.uk/html
(b) for external users

- Please note that content on the web server is not backed up and that schools should keep their own backups of their websites.
2. EMU Web hosted sites
A small number of customers use the EMU web servers to host their website, again:
- Use Filezilla which can be downloaded here (alternatively, type filezilla into a google search and follow the download links). Other tools can be used, but Filezilla allows you to ensure that your connection will work before proceeding to identify appropriate settings in other software.
- This server uses a File Transfer Protocol to upload data. Choose FTP as the Servertype. . Port 21 should be selected in the Port settings box.
- In the server address textbox, type (your website address)
