Visit http://www.broadbandsandwell.org.uk/iptest.htm
2. How can I test the broadband link is working?
In your school's broadband cabinet there are three boxes:
Are the indicator LEDs on for each connection on these boxes?
On the smallest box (either labelled Pandatel or BT), are any of the LEDs red?
Can you get any websites to load, are other workstations able to connect to the Internet?
Can you connect to any internal webservers? (Turn off your proxy settings and try to connect to www.sandwellschools.org.uk)
3. How can I test the broadband WAN data transfer rate?
There is an FTP server inside the WAN. This should be accessible at maximum download speeds determined by your location (this is usually about 10Mbit/s). Connect as follows:
- Obtain individual direct connection to the broadband equipment, disconnecting the rest of your school.
- Open a "DOS" window on the PC (Start..Run, CMD OK)
- ftp 172.28.12.8
- (username is ftpuser, password is ftppass)
- bin
- hash (only if necessary, hash gives a visual cue that something is happening. type hash again to turn it off)
- get 10Mb.zip
- When finished, the time taken will be displayed. This should be between 8 and 12 seconds for a 10Mbit/s connection.
